Giulia is jumping, and thats how they like it in this renovated 100-year-old butcher shop. Local artsy types, students and briefcase carriers alike have installed themselves in every nook and cranny available in this space that borrows a sense of style from neighbouring Newtown. Customers waiting to order form an obstructive line down the café, which is an irritation during the lunchtime crunch (its a long, narrow room, the open kitchen sprawling down the line like a bar, with a courtyard...

Built in a gothic revival style church and doubling as an art gallery is this new addition to Chippo. While the cool, polished concrete space works well in galleries and the right restaurants, to our mind a tapas barslash- restaurant needs something a little warmer and friendlier in terms of décor.
The cocktail list is encouraging – they know their drinks and there’s nothing frilly on the list. A Mojito (rum, lime, mint and soda) is all well and good but you might want to try something gutsier...

As an emerging Sydney suburb, our moneys on Chippendale. Its the new art scene: White Rabbit, the gallery Time Outs art editor describes as "a temple to 21st century Chinese art" is here, as is NG Art gallery above Mission café). There are hidden, high-end warehouse tattoo parlours such as Tatu Dharma. And theres a growing café culture that makes Chippo the suburb we most want to be at and in, right now. While we mourn the closing of the Abercrombie Hotel and arent quite sure what to make...

The Sunday menu looks more like something you’d see in an English pub than a Chippendale café. The roast chicken is excellent. You get half a bird (breast and leg) with a big pile of roast tatties, a little grilled stuffing cake, pumpkin mash, pickled cabbage and gravy. They also do a roast sandwich with your choice of chicken or pork. They don’t offer the regular menu on Sundays, but a separate, smaller menu....

Regulars simply call this "the Fang" or "Fangy", a no-frills Chinese restaurant where you can count on big portions and fast service, even if you can’t always be guaranteed a smile. Local uni students have everything to grin about though, with wonton soup at $4 and a feast of steamed pork dumplings for $8 (14 per serve). The colossal menu barely misses a thing, spanning over 250 dishes and covering everything from prawn laksa ($9.50) to crispy skin chicken ($11.80). The barbecue meat dishes are...

Trevor, tell us about seeing Black Swan for the first time.
A friend had told me that I absolutely had to see the movie and play the role because he thought it’d be hysterical. He said that the papers were heralding the film as a ‘psycho-thriller masterpiece’. He felt that it was less a masterpiece, and closer to Showgirls 2. Only this time, in tutus and tulle. In other words: it was ripe for the picking. I was intrigued.
So I went to see the film and I could not stop laughing. I just found it...
